ASK GATO LOCO A Regular Column by Gato Loco Dear Gato Loco, I am a deaf Chicano living in San Antonio, Texas. My hearing family all speak Spanish at home. I don't know Spanish and never had the opportunity to learn. At home, we use home signs to communicate. I would really like to be able to have more in depth discussions with my family. I have thought of taking Spainish classes but don't want to have to take them using an interpreter. Where can I go to learn Spanish with classes taught in ASL? --Juan in San Antonio Gato Loco Responds: My first try would be to check with your local community college. Since you live in the almighty state of Tejas, you just might have luck! You might also want to consider taking Spanish at Gallaudet University. Classes are taught in ASL. Dear Gato Loco, Is there such a thing as Spanish Sign Language? --Carmen Gato Loco Responds: Si'mon! There certainly is! Most countries have their own sign languages (most of which are very different than ASL). Both Mexico and Spain have their own sign languages. Unlike spoken Spanish, however, sign language in Mexico and Spain are VERY different. Muy, muy differente! Unfortunately, I do not know Spanish or Mexican Sign Language or I'd give you an example. Anyone out there want to give one?
